How to Play Twisted Party

Twisted Party is a retro horror party game for 2–8 players available on Steam for Windows and macOS. The core experience is simple: you and a group of friends enter a lobby, face a rotating series of deadly mini-games, and try to be the last one standing when the rounds end. What makes it compelling is the social dynamic — there are no teams, no permanent alliances, and no way to truly trust anyone in the arena.

The Game Loop

Every Twisted Party session follows the same rough structure. Players gather in a lobby, a countdown begins, and the first mini-game is revealed. You then have a short window to understand the rules and react before the elimination timer expires. Players who fail the objective are removed. Survivors advance to the next round, and the process repeats until one player remains.

Between rounds, surviving players enter a brief interlude — often called the voting capsule — where they wait for the next challenge to load. This is also a moment to catch your breath, but early reviews note that the waiting period sometimes excludes players from participating in the inter-round mini-game entirely.

Open vs. Private Lobbies

When you first load Twisted Party you can choose between an open lobby and a private one. Open lobbies match you with other players on the public servers. Private lobbies let you create a room and share an invite code with specific friends. For the most reliable experience, especially if you are playing with a known group, private lobbies are recommended — public matchmaking has been reported to suffer from connection instability in the launch window.

Round Structure and Elimination

Each round has three phases: reveal, action, and elimination. During the reveal phase, the mini-game title and objective appear on screen. You have a few seconds to read the rules before the timer starts. The action phase is when you compete — dodge traps, reach objectives, or outlast opponents depending on the challenge. The elimination phase removes players who failed and advances survivors.

The Voting Capsule

The voting capsule is the interstitial screen between rounds. It has drawn criticism from early players for several reasons. In some cases, only a subset of the lobby participates in the mini-game that plays during this phase, leaving the rest watching passively. A launch-day patch addressed match cancellation when too many players leave, but the exclusion mechanic has not been fully resolved at the time of writing.

Quick Tips for New Players

Start by understanding that every other player in the lobby is your opponent, not your ally. Temporary truces may form in specific challenges, but there is no cooperative mechanic that rewards group play in the long run. Second, pay close attention to the reveal phase — the single biggest mistake new players make is jumping into a challenge before reading the objective. Third, practice the basic movement and sprint controls in your first few rounds before trying advanced positioning tactics.
